This session is open to teachers & teaching assistants in mainstream and special settings and parents of pupils of primary and secondary age groups.
Our traditional models of Literacy have embraced Phonics and assume a linear progression through pre-determined stages. Progress requires that prerequisite skills are mastered at each level. For many students this model is not effective in scaffolding their developing Literacy skills. In this session we will look at the fundamental building blocks of Literacy and alternative ways to support our students both in the classroom and at home.

Course Leader: Fran Bowen is an Independent Speech and Language Therapist working in Mainstream, Independent and Special Schools in Dorset, supporting children who have a range of Complex Communication needs.
