An Introduction to Using the Structured TEACCHing Approach with Children and Young People across the Autism Spectrum

This 2 day introductory course focuses particularly on using the TEACCH approach (Structured TEACCHing) with children and young people who have Autism, across the spectrum in primary, secondary and specialist school settings across the age range. Over the last thirty years, TEACHH has been evolving, refining their approach and adding the latest research to provide what is widely recognised as a high quality programme by the National Autistic Society of the UK and many other countries.

The course covers an understanding of Autism and its impact on learning, thinking and behaviour and an introduction to the key TEACCH principles and use of the Structured TEACCHing approach.

  • using physical structure to plan effective learning environments
  • using effective schedules
  • using work/activity systems to support concentration and focus
  • using visual structure to create effective tasks and lead to independent working

(Participants will have the opportunity to apply course content through practical tasks) 

 

Mary Pittman, project leader of REACCH Autism South West, has over 30 years experience of working in the field of autism across a range of ages and settings. She has a Masters Degree in Autism and has worked for the University of Carolina TEACCH Autism programme in USA and the UK. She is one of a small number of professionals in the UK who have worked for the TEACCH programme.

Sandra Souness provides consultancy and training in Autism and in the setting up of TEACCH structured teaching programmes as well as providing support for young people in the Social, Life Skills and Employment programme as required by REACCH Autism South West
