In support of Alcohol Awareness Week 19/11/18

For teachers & teaching assistants working with secondary age groups in mainstream and special settings.

Course led by Helena Conibear, CEO of the Alcohol Education Trust…

Following a long career specialising in alcohol, health and responsible drinking, Helena, with a group of like-minded specialists in alcohol, PSHE and education, founded the Alcohol Education Trust in 2009, establishing it as a charity in 2010. Helena is a Trustee of The Institute for Health Promotion and Education, a member of the European Society for Prevention Research, and of The National Health Education Group.

Preparing for transition from school to facing college, leaving home or a first job can be traumatic for any teenager, but particularly for those with learning difficulties. Children with SEN and diagnosis such as ADHD are significantly more likely to face addictions and are more vulnerable to grooming so supporting them with tools and strategies to stay safer and cope as they get older are of great importance.

This workshop will focus on tools and strategies to help students stay safer through whole class and small group activities for mainstream and special school setting, focussing on:

  • How to recognise risky situations and the motivations of others
  • Developing understanding of how alcohol can affect consent
  • Making decisions
  • Using games, lesson plans and on line resources that bring alcohol education to life for pupils with SEND.
